HERA (Roman name: JUNO)

Hera, Goddess of Marriage and Queen of the gods, was the child of Cronus and Rhea.  Hera was raised by the Titans until she was old enough to go out on her own. She was forced to marry Zeus, her brother, and had three children, Hebe, Ares, and Hephaestos.

When he was born, Hephaestos was an ugly child.  In disgust, Hera threw him off of Mount Olympus. He fell for an entire day and was lamed when he hit the bottom.

Hera was not a loyal wife, but Zeus was a pretty bad husband as well. Once, Hera got so mad at Zeus that she banded  together with the other gods and planned to kill Zeus.  First, they kidnapped him while he was sleeping and tied him in a rope using one hundred knots.  But, they didn’t know what to do next.

Other gods realized that Zeus was missing and formed a search party to look for him.  When the gods found Zeus, they freed him.  All the gods who had kidnapped Zeus begged for mercy. All, that is, except Hera.

She was severely punished.  Hera was hung by her ankles from the sky with heavy gold chains.  Zeus couldn’t sleep with all her moaning and groaning, so he let her go with a promise that she’d never do something like that again.

I think Hera is interesting because she is the queen of the gods.  One of her sacred animals, the peacock is my favorite animal too.  Hera could shoot thunderbolts like Zeus.  She was a great goddess.
